There are a lot of companies out there promoting ipe, teak, tigerwood and other domestic and exotic hardwoods as eco-friendly. This leads to a dilemma; how can consumers find lumber companies that are truly dedicated to sustainable forestry practices and the production of eco-friendly wood? As the general public becomes more environmentally conscious, we must not be quick to believe anything labeled organic, eco-friendly, and/or environmentally safe. After all, it’s one thing to merely say, or promote yourself as eco-friendly; it’s another to actually live and form habits that are designed to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle and economy. This is true whether you are buying ipe decking, tigerwood flooring, or even composite decking. To put it simply, companies are trying to cash into the green building revolution by simply putting a banner on their website stating that they offer eco-friendly wood. These companies believe that consumers will go to them, see their website and say, “That’s it. I’ve found the perfect place to buy my eco-friendly decking.

There’s no doubt about it, eco-friendly wood is all the rage.

My search is over!” However, one thing that these companies fail to realize is that homeowners are not as naïve as previously hoped. In fact, thanks to the Internet, homeowners and builders alike are weeding out those companies who are not committed to sustainable wood and forestry practices.

Finding eco-friendly lumber companies is easier than ever thanks to organizations such as The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). These organizations are dedicated to ensuring that the forests and rainforests where many of these woods come from are preserved and taken care of for generations to come. The Forest Stewardship Council also has a strict set of policies and forestry procedures that must be followed to the letter. For example, if a direct importer of ipe decking wants to harvest some ipe lumber from a managed forest, the FSC will specially designate which trees are to be used, and which are to be left in place. In addition, the FSC could also require that a FSC Certified lumber company also harvest some other hardwood such as cumaru, or garapa. The FSC mandates forestry practices like these in order to balance out the environment. Only then can that ipe decking receive FSC Certification.

As you can see, there are valid and reliable non-profit resources that are able to adequately provide decking materials that can truly be called eco-friendly. Homeowners and builders who want to work with lumber companies that are FSC Certified can do so without worrying about being manipulated. A couple of lumber companies that fit the mold are Advantage Trim & Lumber Company and Ipe Depot. Before they received their FSC Certification, they were already a leader in promoting managed forests and sustainable forestry practices. Advantage Trim & Lumber Company and Ipe Depot don’t just say that they’re eco-friendly, they actually go out of their way to make sure that all of their wood and not just their inventory of FSC Certified wood is eco-friendly.

George Amarillo is an ipe decking expert. He can help the general public understand the importance of building with eco-friendly wood that does not damage the environment.

With issues like global warming plaguing the world these days, environmentalists are waking up to the use of more environment friendly sources of fuel. One such revolutionary fuel source to be discovered is wood pellets. Here we discuss how these seemingly small sources of energy can actually save the environment!

Carbon neutral source

The way wood pellets work is that they release exactly the same amount of carbon dioxide as what the growing plant would have used. So that means whatever amount of carbon dioxide gets consumed by the growing plant ultimately gets released into the atmosphere when the wood gets burned. This is why this is a very balanced and eco-friendly energy source. There is no excess amount of carbon dioxide that gets emitted while burning this energy source.

Even more carbon savings

As compared to other alternative environment friendly sources of energy such as solar energy and wind power it is the wood pellets which save up the maximum amount of carbon dioxide emissions. Another attraction for this energy source is that one can extract a lot more from a single tree than is possible with other sources. For example as little as 30% of a single tree is used in making wood pellets. The remaining portion is used in making and cutting up wooden planks. From just this 30% of the tree one can manufacture 3 tonnes quantity of wood pellets. These can be sufficient to warm 200 homes for a duration of around a week! That is a lot of energy coming from a single tree!

How it gets made

The wood pellets are made by breaking the wood into sawdust and then drying it up. This sawdust is then forced through die to compress into wood pellets. These pellets then get cooled and then stored in special containers. However the process can be tedious and painstaking as just one single particle of wood will take around 2 hours to get transformed into a pellet. However, every amount of time taken will be worth the effort as this environment friendly source of energy is here to stay and is particularly useful in saving the environment.

Planting new trees

The good thing about wood pellets is that they can always be manufactured as trees can be planted anytime. This is unlike other alternative energy sources like solar energy and wind power which depend on the elements of nature. The wood boilers are also considered to be much cheaper in cost as compared to other eco-friendly sources like wind power. For example wind turbines have been found to be much more expensive than the boilers used for heating wood pellets.

Using up forestry waste

Wood pellets can be very useful in eliminating landfills. There are plenty of forests all across the world and the wasted wood from these can be put to very good use. If such wood is left standing then it can result in the production of methane gas which again damages the environment. Instead if it gets used in the manufacture of wood pellets then we can see some significant advantages. It is in essence almost like recycling waste.

We all share this beautiful planet called earth! And we all are equally responsible to save it by doing every little bit we can. The easiest way to do this is using eco friendly products. When it comes to our home decor, we can buy wood home furniture that is eco-friendly. I’ll tell you how to go green with your furniture wood but before knowing some tips about buying eco friendly furniture, it is helpful to know in what ways furniture affects environment and how we can minimize this environmental pollution by going for green furniture?

What is Green Furniture?

We all know that furniture wood is a forest product. Many trees are harvested for getting that fine wood for your home and office furniture. However, green furniture is not green because it comes from forests but it is green in the sense of its being eco-friendly. Furniture is considered eco-friendly according to its impact on the environment. How the wood is harvested and to what extent this contributes to forest depletion, whether it has eco-friendly upholstery on it, how much chemicals and toxic paints etc. are used in making them, how it will affect the surrounding air quality- all contribute in defining a furniture as eco friendly. When a wood furniture causes minimum deforestation, uses non toxic materials for finishes and do not pollute the home environment, it is called an eco-friendly wood furniture.

How to Buy Eco-friendly Furniture?

Here are certain tips on how to buy green furniture? Follow them and be a responsible and proud earth dweller.

Buy FSC-certified woods. They are researched and certified as socially and environmentally harvested by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This council is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization which works for promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. Buy reclaimed and recycled wood products. Many wood furniture manufacturers reuse discarded furniture and lumber. Refrain from buying endangered woods. Select furniture made from “secondary species” which are less depleted. These species include sweetgum, madrone, and California oak. Buy lower grade woods as lesser timber is needed to produce a low-grade wood product than a high-grade product. Many low-grade woods are rated low just because they show knots and streaks. Ask the manufacturer, where and how the wood was harvested. Particleboard, plywood, and other pressed woods contain formaldehyde, a possible carcinogen leading to poor air quality in your home and office. As such, avoid pressed woods and go for second-hand solid wood, or FSC-certified new wood pieces. Do your furniture shopping at antique stores, garage sales, and thrift stores where you can find furniture made from solid wood. Buy furniture made from rubberwood. It is very sustainable and one of the most eco-friendly lumber used by the modern furniture industry. Most of the other woods are obtained from trees that are cut down just to make furniture. However, rubberwood is harvested only after it completes the cycle of producing latex and dies for about 18-25 years before dying. Buy those furniture pieces that are finished with nontoxic paints, stains and varnishes. Buy bamboo furniture. Bamboo grows fast and is able to replenish itself quickly. This makes it eco-friendly otion for furniture making. Buy locally made furniture to reduce the pollution created from shipping them long distances. If any how you want to buy a furniture that is made in a particular region, you can buy it from local retailer and help in cutting down on transport. If you find eco-friendly furniture costly, start small. Don’t try to change all your home furniture at once. Buy small pieces initially and buy one by one as and when you can manage to spend on expensive furniture. Also you can first buy something having only one sustainable component such as reclaimed wood but treated with a conventional stain and finish. These are less expensive and you can find them easily. Additionally, you can choose unfinished wood and finish it yourself with eco-friendly products.
