To put it simply, companies are trying to cash into the green building revolution by simply putting a banner on their website stating that they offer eco-friendly wood. These companies believe that consumers will go to them, see their website and say, “That’s it. I’ve found the perfect place to buy my eco-friendly decking. My search is over!” However, one thing that these companies fail to realize is that homeowners are not as naïve as previously hoped. In fact, thanks to the Internet, homeowners and builders alike are weeding out those companies who are not committed to sustainable wood and forestry practices.

Finding eco-friendly lumber companies is easier than ever thanks to organizations such as The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). These organizations are dedicated to ensuring that the forests and rainforests where many of these woods come from are preserved and taken care of for generations to come. The Forest Stewardship Council also has a strict set of policies and forestry procedures that must be followed to the letter. The way wood pellets work is that they release exactly the same amount of carbon dioxide as what the growing plant would have used. So that means whatever amount of carbon dioxide gets consumed by the growing plant ultimately gets released into the atmosphere when the wood gets burned. This is why this is a very balanced and eco-friendly energy source. There is no excess amount of carbon dioxide that gets emitted while burning this energy source.

How it gets made

The wood pellets are made by breaking the wood into sawdust and then drying it up. This sawdust is then forced through die to compress into wood pellets. These pellets then get cooled and then stored in special containers. However the process can be tedious and painstaking as just one single particle of wood will take around 2 hours to get transformed into a pellet. However, every amount of time taken will be worth the effort as this environment friendly source of energy is here to stay and is particularly useful in saving the environment.

Planting new trees

The good thing about wood pellets is that they can always be manufactured as trees can be planted anytime. This is unlike other alternative energy sources like solar energy and wind power which depend on the elements of nature. The wood boilers are also considered to be much cheaper in cost as compared to other eco-friendly sources like wind power. For example wind turbines have been found to be much more expensive than the boilers used for heating wood pellets.

Using up forestry waste

Wood pellets can be very useful in eliminating landfills. There are plenty of forests all across the world and the wasted wood from these can be put to very good use. Many low-grade woods are rated low just because they show knots and streaks. Ask the manufacturer, where and how the wood was harvested. Particleboard, plywood, and other pressed woods contain formaldehyde, a possible carcinogen leading to poor air quality in your home and office. As such, avoid pressed woods and go for second-hand solid wood, or FSC-certified new wood pieces. Do your furniture shopping at antique stores, garage sales, and thrift stores where you can find furniture made from solid wood. Buy furniture made from rubberwood. It is very sustainable and one of the most eco-friendly lumber used by the modern furniture industry. Most of the other woods are obtained from trees that are cut down just to make furniture. However, rubberwood is harvested only after it completes the cycle of producing latex and dies for about 18-25 years before dying. Buy those furniture pieces  that are finished with nontoxic paints, stains and varnishes. Buy bamboo furniture. Bamboo grows fast and is able to replenish itself quickly. This makes it eco-friendly otion for furniture making. Buy locally made furniture to reduce the pollution created from shipping them long distances. If any how you want to buy a furniture that is made in a particular region, you can buy it from local retailer and help in cutting down on transport. If you find eco-friendly furniture costly, start small. Don’t try to change all your home furniture at once.
