Formaldehyde is so common, I would encourage all parents to test all children's bedrooms. Parents can test themselves using the passive formaldehyde badges Sierra Club used in the initial testing of FEMA trials. They are available on-line, cost $40 including the lab analysis. It is so simple any parent can do it.

The CA Attorney General is currently in litigation with several baby furniture manufactures. Other sources could be laminate flooring, the MDF trim and doors, fuzzy hangers, toy chests and even personal care products.

The more energy efficient your home is the more likely formaldehyde and other chemicals will be elevated. This is because energy efficent homes decrease the amount of fresh clean outside air that leaks in naturally. Indoor air is typically five to ten times more polluted than outside air.

Open the window and let the fresh air in OR get a fresh air make up system with a heat exchanger. You can do this for the entire house or just for the important rooms.

You may want to do a second test during a summer heat wave, as formaldehyde concentration will approximately double for every 10 degree increase in temperature. So 88 will be about four time higher than 68.

If you get high levels, a Certified Industrial Hygienist can identify the specific sources using a direct read meter. Sources can be moved, eliminated and/or remediated.
