Organic Pest Control

Pesticides are dangerous to living things — sure, they can kill bugs, but they can also harm human beings and pets. The way many pesticides work is by poisoning the nervous system. People who are very sensitive to certain environmental chemicals (even if they can’t smell them) suffer adverse effects, often in their nervous system function. Impaired mental function and difficulty concentrating, as well as mood changes can occur. Babies and pets are especially susceptible to problems with pesticides inside the home. Over the long haul, even though there are controversies, it appears that pesticide exposures early in life increase the risks for Parkinson’s Disease (a degenerative disease of part of the brain controlling physical movement — the illness that Michael J. Fox has struggled with).

For pets, other chemicals such as herbicides on lawns can actually increase the rate of lymphoma and other cancers. Even DEET, the common insect repellent in many commercial products you can buy at the local store (which can get into the nervous system when applied to the skin), has been found to cause big problems for people’s health.

The digital book on Organic Pest Control is a way to get started in a healthier direction. Organic pest control is a lot safer overall, though you always have to make sure you tolerate anything – synthetic or “natural” – that you might use for getting rid of bugs, weeds, and other undesirables in your home and garden.
